Biography

Andy Douglas was born in Toledo, Ohio. He attended the University of Toledo College of Law where he received a Juris Doctor degree in 1959.

Following his graduation, Justice Douglas maintained a private practice with the law firm of Winchester & Douglas as a partner from 1960 through 1980. In 1980, Justice Douglas was elected to the Sixth District Court of Appeals and served there until he was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1984. Justice Douglas was subsequently reelected to two terms with the Ohio Supreme Court and retired as required by the Ohio Constitution in 2002.

The Justice joined Crabbe, Brown & James in 2003. In 2004, he left the firm to become Executive Director of OCSEA, a labor union representing government workers throughout the State of Ohio. Justice Douglas is now a Special Partner with the firm.

Justice Douglas’ many accomplishments include serving as special counsel to the Attorney General of Ohio, as well as serving as an adjunct assistant professor at Ohio Dominican College and the University of Toledo Community and Technical Colleges. He served as a member of the Toledo City Council from 1961 through 1980, and was an instructor for the Ohio Judicial Conference and the Ohio Judicial College. Having been appointed by the Chief Justice, he sat as a trial judge in the Sixth District from 1982 through 1983. Justice Douglas is also a veteran, having served in both the infantry and the signal corps of the United States Army with the rank of First Lieutenant.

Justice Douglas’ memberships include the Toledo, Lucas County, Columbus, and Ohio State Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society, the National Political Science Honor Society, the Toledo University Alumni Association, University of Toledo Law Alumni, Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity, Trustee of the North Toledo Oldtimers’ Football Association, and the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association.
